Chelsea agree record £117m deal for Villa's Rogers
New manager Xabi Alonso begins squad restructuring with club-record signing

Chelsea have agreed a club-record £117m transfer fee to sign England international midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The 23-year-old is set to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for a further year, subject to a medical following his return from international duty with England at the 2026 World Cup. The deal surpasses Chelsea’s previous record fee of £107m paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023 and sets a new benchmark for an English player, eclipsing the £116m fee Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.

The acquisition marks the beginning of significant squad restructuring under new manager Xabi Alonso, whose four-year contract officially commences on 1 July. Alonso, who replaces interim manager Calum McFarlane, must now integrate Rogers into a midfield and attacking unit that already includes Cole Palmer and Estevao Willian. The move comes despite Chelsea’s 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season, underlining the club’s continued ability to attract top-tier talent despite missing out on European football.

Rogers, who scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Aston Villa and was part of the squad that won the Europa League last season, becomes the second Villa midfielder to depart recently, following Youri Tielemans’ £35m move to Manchester United. Aston Villa have responded by signing Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for more than £50m and are targeting Wolves’ Joao Gomes for £38m. Rogers’ arrival highlights the competitive nature of the Premier League’s transfer market, where clubs are actively reshaping their rosters ahead of the new season.

Financially, the deal has significant implications for Middlesbrough, who hold a 20% sell-on clause from their original acquisition of Rogers in February 2024. The Championship club is entitled to at least £20.4m from the transfer, a figure they believe represents an English record for the largest transfer sell-on fee. This clause was part of the original £8m deal, which could rise to £15m depending on performance-based add-ons at Villa Park.

The integration of Rogers raises tactical questions for Alonso, particularly regarding his relationship with Cole Palmer. The two are close friends and former Manchester City academy teammates, with Palmer’s “Cold Palmer” celebration inspired by Rogers. Rogers was one of three England players selected by Thomas Tuchel for the World Cup squad at Palmer’s expense, highlighting their positional similarities. Alonso, who has previously utilised both back four and back five systems, faces the challenge of balancing Rogers, Palmer, and other attacking options like Pedro Neto and Jamie Gittens in a squad that may only play one game per week next season.
