Chef’s investing journey highlights US gaps in financial education
A chef changing careers says learning about money after serious debt helped build an emergency fund and a path towards retirement savings.

A chef changing careers says studying personal finance after serious debt has helped them begin investing, build an emergency fund and work towards greater retirement security.
The individual, whose finances are not independently verified, said they began learning about investing and personal finance about four years ago. They had previously believed they would rely almost entirely on Social Security in retirement, but said learning about stocks, bonds, index funds, taxes, retirement accounts and compounding gave them a clearer path forward.
The chef said their emergency fund remains relatively small in dollar terms but covers about six months of monthly expenses. They have also returned to school and are pursuing the Enrolled Agent credential, while encouraging family members to improve their financial knowledge.
The account points to wider gaps in US financial education. The Council for Economic Education’s Survey of the States, cited by Yahoo Finance, says 39 states require some personal-finance education for high-school graduation, although requirements vary. California, Delaware, Colorado and Hawaii require a semester-long standalone personal-finance course, according to the article.
Retirement-plan participation also remains uneven. A May 2026 Gallup poll cited by Yahoo Finance reportedly found that about 40% of Americans had no money in a retirement savings plan, either individually or through a spouse. Participation was reported at 83% among households earning at least US$100,000 a year, compared with 28% among households earning less than US$50,000.
The figures also showed differences by education, race and gender, underscoring that access to financial knowledge is only one factor shaping retirement outcomes. The chef’s experience illustrates a progression towards financial security, but does not establish that investing alone guarantees it.
