CD Projekt Red sets 29 September launch for remastered The Witcher 3
The Polish studio confirmed the release date for the overhauled role-playing game at Gamescom, offering existing owners a free upgrade that includes a path to the Nintendo Switch 2.
CD Projekt Red has confirmed that a remastered version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, including both previous downloadable content expansions, will be released on 29 September. The announcement was made during the Gamescom Opening Night Live showcase, marking a significant update for one of the most popular fantasy role-playing franchises in recent years.
Existing owners of the game will receive the upgrade at no additional cost. The studio also specified that players who purchased the original Nintendo Switch version will receive a free upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 edition, ensuring broader accessibility across current and next-generation hardware.
The remaster goes beyond standard visual enhancements to include substantial system overhauls. The skill tree has been revised, while combat systems have been tweaked to improve camera control and targeting mechanics. New finishers have been added to the gameplay loop, and movement and traversal for the protagonist, Geralt, have been adjusted to feel smoother. Mount handling has also been refined, though the studio noted that some of the character’s distinctive quirks may remain.
In addition to the remaster, CD Projekt Red teased a third DLC expansion titled Songs of the Past. The studio provided a short gameplay teaser at the event, with the expansion scheduled for release next year. This addition is notable given that the original title is more than a decade old.
The update arrives at a time when fans are waiting for the next proper sequel to the franchise, which is not expected until at least 2028. Meanwhile, a modern remake of the first Witcher game is currently underway, further extending the life of the series.
