AFC offseason grades : Raiders build well around Fernando Mendoza, Jaguars make puzzling moves
Raiders praised for drafting Fernando Mendoza; Jaguars criticised for puzzling decisions

CBS Sports has published its grading and ranking of all AFC teams’ 2026 offseason activities, assessing roster construction and strategic moves ahead of the upcoming season. The evaluation highlights significant personnel changes, with the Las Vegas Raiders receiving high praise for securing quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the first overall pick and adding key coaching and roster support. Conversely, the Miami Dolphins were noted for a strategic reset following the dismissal of head coach Mike McDaniel and the trade of star players, while the Jacksonville Jaguars faced criticism for unresolved roster deficiencies.

The Raiders were highlighted for building an ideal environment for Mendoza, hiring head coach Klint Kubiak and signing centre Tyler Linderbaum to a deal that made him the highest-paid centre in the NFL. The organisation also added veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins to mentor the rookie, alongside linebacker additions Quay Walker and Nakobe Dean. CBS Sports described the Raiders’ approach as a worthwhile gamble for a rebuilding team, noting the savvy selection of corner Jermod McCoy in the fourth round despite injury concerns.

In contrast, the Miami Dolphins stripped down their roster, firing McDaniel and trading away Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Bradley Chubb. The team appointed Jon-Eric Sullivan as general manager and Jeff Hafley as head coach, slotting Malik Willis as the starting quarterback. Miami used its first-round picks on offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor and corner Chris Johnson, but the evaluation noted that the wide receiver position remains a significant question mark for the franchise.

The Buffalo Bills were commended for acquiring wide receiver D.J. Moore and defensive end Bradley Chubb, addressing critical needs under new head coach Joe Brady. The Pittsburgh Steelers were noted for re-signing veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a one-year deal, adding win-now pieces such as wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. However, the Steelers were criticised for missing out on receiver Makai Lemon during the draft, forcing a pivot to offensive tackle Max Iheanachor.

Other notable assessments included the Houston Texans extending Will Anderson Jr. and the Tennessee Titans hiring Robert Saleh. The Kansas City Chiefs added Kenneth Walker III and Mansoor Delane, while the Jacksonville Jaguars were criticised for making puzzling moves and failing to address roster holes, particularly after losing Devin Lloyd and Travis Etienne.
