CBS Sports analyst Dave Richard has advised Fantasy Football managers to exercise caution when drafting Christian McCaffrey for the 2026 season, recommending that teams avoid selecting him as a first-round pick despite his elite status. While McCaffrey delivered top-tier performance in 2025, Richard argues that the combination of a career-high workload and his entry into his age-30 season presents significant risks for injury and production decline.
McCaffrey recorded 450 touches across 19 games last year, the second-highest total for any running back since 2015. Historical data indicates that running backs with similar heavy usage patterns or those aged 28 and older frequently suffer significant drops in efficiency or injuries in the following year. Richard noted that McCaffrey has previously missed substantial time in 2020 and 2024 following seasons of heavy usage, suggesting a recurring vulnerability despite his defensive comments regarding workload management.
Statistical analysis of running backs with 400 or more touches since 2010 reveals a concerning trend. McCaffrey is one of only two instances, alongside his own injury-plagued seasons, where a player with high volume failed to follow up with a strong year. Furthermore, no running back has finished atop the PPR per-game rankings two years in a row since Todd Gurley in 2017 and 2018, highlighting the rarity of sustained dominance at the position.
Despite the warnings, Richard ranks McCaffrey ninth overall in his PPR rankings, positioning him as a viable late first-round pick. He argues that even a substantial decline in production would likely yield results superior to most other available players. Richard suggests that managers should draft McCaffrey toward the back end of the first round, viewing the selection as a calculated risk rather than a guaranteed top-tier asset.
The analyst also highlighted the potential value of McCaffrey’s backup, identifying Jordan James as the slight clubhouse leader for the role. James is expected to be in high demand during the middle-to-late rounds of drafts, as managers seek insurance against McCaffrey’s injury history.
