World Cup 2026 odds, futures: Why Switzerland can be this tournament's dark horse contender
Defensive solidity and squad experience cited as key factors for Swiss contention in expanded tournament

The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to commence on 11 June, with matches spread across North America. The tournament’s expansion from 32 to 48 teams has been noted as a factor that increases opportunities for surprise runs by underdog nations. In this context, CBS Sports has published an analysis identifying Switzerland as a potential dark horse contender, citing their strong defensive record, experienced squad, and recent success in high-stakes matches.

Switzerland enters the tournament with a formidable defensive structure, having conceded only two goals in six World Cup qualifying matches. The back line features four primary defenders with 50 or more international appearances, including Ricardo Rodriguez and Manuel Akanji. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel has provided stability, recording 15 clean sheets in 34 appearances for Borussia Dortmund in the previous domestic season, replacing veteran Yann Sommer.

The squad’s experience is anchored by midfielder Granit Xhaka, who will captain the side and has earned more than 140 caps. Other key veterans include Remo Freuler, Breel Embolo, and Ruben Vargas, all of whom have over 50 appearances. Manager Murat Yakin, who has been in charge since 2021, has built on the foundation laid by his predecessor Vladimir Petkovic during Euro 2020.

Recent form has shown resilience, with victories over Mexico and the United States in friendlies, alongside a 4-3 loss to Germany. The team has exited the World Cup in the Round of 16 in four of the last five tournaments but has reached the quarterfinals of the European Championship in each of the last two editions, losing both in penalty shootouts.

CBS Sports suggests Switzerland is well-positioned to win Group B, where they will face Canada, Qatar, and Bosnia & Herzegovina. The analysis predicts a likely Round of 16 matchup against either Colombia or Portugal, with a potential quarterfinal clash against Argentina. Betting odds cited include Switzerland to reach the quarterfinals at +290 and the semifinals at +870.
