2026 Season Opener Countdown: 81 Days Remaining
Fan blog shifts format for 2026 season opener build-up

Cat Scratch Reader, a Carolina Panthers fan blog, has launched its annual countdown to the team’s 2026 NFL season opener against the Chicago Bears. Marking a departure from the previous decade’s format, the countdown now ranks the franchise’s Top 100 players of all time rather than assigning jersey numbers to the days remaining.

The list includes Matt Moore, an undrafted free agent who joined the Panthers in 2007. Moore is highlighted for his performance in a 2009 upset victory over the Minnesota Vikings, where he started five games that season and five in 2010 as a backup to Jake Delhomme. Moore later played eight additional seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Miami Dolphins.

Moore was signed by the Dallas Cowboys in 2007 as an undrafted free agent but was waived and claimed by the Panthers in September of that year. He played sparingly in 2007 following Jake Delhomme’s elbow injury, finishing with a 2-1 record as a starter and winning the offensive rookie of the month award for December.

The 2009 season proved pivotal for Moore, who started five games and won four of them during a period when the Panthers were dealing with injuries at the quarterback position. His most notable performance came in a 26-7 upset victory over the Minnesota Vikings, where he completed 21 of 33 passes for 299 yards and three touchdowns.

The ranking is a subjective editorial choice by the blog, which noted the exclusion of another player due to off-field issues. The author stated that while someone else was initially considered for the spot, Moore’s career trajectory and key performances embodied the franchise’s history of utilising players who might not have been given the opportunity elsewhere.
