Carrick shortlisted for Premier League Manager of the Season award
Michael Carrick’s interim tenure has seen Manchester United climb to third place, securing Champions League football and earning him a spot on the six-man shortlist for the league’s top managerial honour.
Manchester United caretaker head coach Michael Carrick has been named on a six-man shortlist for the Premier League’s Manager of the Season award. Carrick, who replaced Ruben Amorim in January, has overseen 15 games in charge, winning 10 of them for a 66.7 per cent success rate.
The former United midfielder, 44, has secured a return to the Champions League after guiding United from seventh to third in the table. No Premier League club has won more points than United’s 33 since Carrick’s appointment on 13 January. United chiefs are expected to recommend that Carrick be appointed as permanent manager following his impressive spell.
Carrick is joined on the shortlist by Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta and Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, who are vying to win this season’s league title. Arteta is two victories from delivering Arsenal’s first Premier League title since 2004, while Guardiola could win Manager of the Season for a sixth time.
Departing Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola, Brentford’s Keith Andrews and Sunderland’s Regis le Bris have also been nominated. Iraola has taken Bournemouth to the brink of qualifying for Europe for the first time in their history, while Andrews can also achieve that feat with Brentford in his first season as a manager. Under Le Bris, Sunderland have spent much of their first season back in the English top flight inside the top half of the table, clear of relegation trouble.
The winners will be decided by a combination of a public vote and a panel of football experts. In the Player of the Season category, nominees include Arsenal’s David Raya, Gabriel and Declan Rice, Manchester City’s Antoine Semenyo and Erling Haaland, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, Brentford striker Igor Thiago and Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White.
The Young Player of the Season shortlist, for players aged 23 or younger at the start of the campaign, includes West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, Brentford’s Michael Kayode and Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo. Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi and Alex Scott, plus City’s Rayan Cherki and Nico O’Reilly, have also made the eight-man shortlist.
