Carrick highlights structural positives in United’s pre-season opener
Manchester United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Wrexham, but Michael Carrick pointed to tactical integration and player availability as key metrics from the opening pre-season match.

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has directed attention toward squad fitness and tactical integration following the club’s 1-0 pre-season defeat to Wrexham in Helsinki. Speaking to MUTV after the fixture, Carrick emphasised that the primary objective for the opening match was to secure player availability and establish match rhythm rather than secure a competitive result.
The squad, which Carrick noted had been back together for approximately 10 days, reported no injuries. The coach stated that the focus was on progressing through the initial weeks of training, acknowledging that sharp movements and tactical precision at the top end of the pitch would develop as the pre-season campaign advances.
Carrick highlighted the midfield partnership between new recruit Andrey Santos and Mason Mount as a significant positive. Santos, the 22-year-old former Vasco da Gama player, was observed shielding the defence and executing forward passes, suggesting he is capable of operating independently in the No. 6 role. Carrick described the link-up play between the two as effective, noting that Santos was regaining his rhythm and fit within the system.
United fielded a tweaked lineup for the fixture, with Leny Yoro starting at right back and Patrick Dorgu occupying the left wing. The structural adjustments allowed Carrick to assess how Santos’ ability to link play might benefit forward options such as Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha in the upcoming season.
The defeat marks United’s first pre-season outing before they travel to Trondheim to face Rosenborg on 24 July. Carrick acknowledged that the upcoming fixture presents a sterner test, as the Norwegian side is already 13 games into their domestic campaign. The squad will look to build on the fitness gains made in Helsinki as they prepare for the more demanding schedule ahead.
