Cardinals’ Walker claims inaugural Derby title in Philadelphia

Jordan Walker has secured the 2026 MLB Home Run Derby title, becoming the first player from the St Louis Cardinals franchise to win the competition. The 24-year-old right fielder claimed victory in his debut appearance, defeating Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber in the final round at Citizens Bank Park.

Walker’s triumph was defined by a streak of six consecutive home runs in the final. He finished with 12 home runs in 18 swings, securing the win via the final-swing home run bonus after Schwarber missed his last attempt. Schwarber had hit 11 home runs in 15 swings, but Walker’s efficiency proved decisive in a tightly contested conclusion.

The event featured a revised format that removed the pitch clock and determined winners based on home run percentage rather than total volume. This structural change resulted in a competition lasting approximately two-and-a-half hours, a notable reduction from previous years where extra time bonuses extended the duration. The new rules drew mixed reactions, with observers noting a fairer contest for hitters but a slower, less frenetic pace.

Walker faced significant opposition from the home crowd, which numbered 43,863 fans. Attendees largely booed non-Philadelphia players and cheered for local stars, including Schwarber and eliminated teammate Bryce Harper. Despite the hostile environment, Walker silenced the stadium to claim the trophy, adding to a strong regular season that has helped propel the Cardinals into playoff contention.

Other notable performances included Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero, who hit the longest blast of the night at 491 feet before being eliminated in the semifinals. Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras was also eliminated in the semifinals by Schwarber, while New York Yankees first baseman Ben Rice recorded the lowest first-round total with seven home runs.
