The good, good and ugly in Arizona Cardinals' Week 4 loss
NFL

The Arizona Cardinals’ 36-24 defeat to the New York Giants in Week 4 of the NFL season was defined by a failure to contain explosive passing plays, despite a disciplined approach to stopping the run. Giants quarterback Jameis Winston completed 18 passes for 250 yards, with 166 of those yards coming on just five plays. Head coach Mike LaFleur acknowledged the need to limit such "explosives," noting that the coaching staff would review game tape to identify where defensive breakdowns occurred in zone coverage.

The Cardinals’ defensive line successfully stifled New York’s ground attack, limiting the Giants to 87 yards on 28 attempts. Running back Cam Skattebo managed 58 yards on 18 carries, while Najee Harris added 30 yards on nine attempts. The defensive unit recorded seven tackles for loss, led by Walter Nolen III, who accounted for two of them. This performance contrasted sharply with the secondary’s vulnerability to deep throws, particularly a 40-yard completion to wide receiver Malachi Fields in the third quarter.

Injury concerns compounded the defensive challenges, as safety Andrew Wingard exited the game in the first quarter with a knee injury. Wingard had been a key contributor in the first three games, recording 22 tackles, an interception, and a forced fumble. His absence, along with the continued inactivity of Dadrion Taylor-Demerson due to a back injury, resulted in increased playing time for rookie undrafted free agent Wydett Williams Jr.

The Cardinals did generate takeaways, including an interception by safety Budda Baker in the third quarter that led to a touchdown and a 24-19 lead. Cornerback Denzel Burke also secured an interception at the Cardinals’ 25-yard line, setting up a 60-yard field goal by Chad Ryland. However, the team struggled to convert other opportunities, such as a fumble recovery by Zaven Collins, which resulted in a three-and-out possession.

The loss marks a difficult period for the Cardinals, who are also dealing with the season-ending torn bicep injury to left tackle Paris Johnson Jr. LaFleur’s post-game comments highlighted the urgency to correct defensive lapses quickly, as the team continues to navigate roster changes and offensive inconsistencies.

The result underscores the high cost of giving up big plays in the NFL, where a handful of explosive completions can negate a strong overall defensive effort. As the Cardinals prepare for their next fixture, the focus will remain on tightening coverage and ensuring that turnovers are converted into points more effectively.
