Bowen commits to West Ham for Championship campaign with promotion-linked release clause
The 29-year-old rejects speculation over his future, citing a desire for immediate return to the top flight and confidence in the current squad, while a new clause triggers if promotion is not secured.
West Ham United captain Jarrod Bowen has formally adjusted his contract to remain with the club for the 2026/27 season in the Sky Bet Championship, following the team’s relegation from the Premier League in May. The 29-year-old has dismissed transfer speculation, stating his primary objective is to spearhead an immediate return to the top flight.
Bowen, who had started every game and played the entirety of all but two matches during the 2025/26 campaign, scored nine goals and provided 11 assists in the Premier League before the drop. His decision to stay comes after six-and-a-half seasons at the club, during which he established himself as a talismanic figure for the Hammers.
The adjustment to his existing deal, which runs until 2030, includes a release clause that will activate in 2027 if West Ham fails to secure promotion. Conversely, reports indicate Bowen will receive a significant financial bonus if the club achieves an immediate return to the Premier League.
Bowen visited West Ham’s largest shareholder, Daniel Kretinsky, in Prague over the summer for discussions regarding the club’s future. He emphasised that the decision was personal and not influenced by his wife, Dani Dyer, or his father-in-law, Danny Dyer, both of whom are avid supporters of the club.
Despite missing out on the 2026 World Cup squad, Bowen expressed confidence in the current squad’s mentality and the manager’s understanding of the club. He acknowledged the physical demands of the Championship, having previously spent two-and-a-half seasons at Hull City, where he scored 52 goals in 117 games.
The club has undergone significant changes, with key players Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville departing this summer. Bowen stated that sticking with the manager from the previous season would provide stability as the team navigates the competitive second tier.
Bowen’s focus remains on the immediate task of promotion rather than long-term ambitions. He noted that while winning the league is a desire, any method of returning to the Premier League would be acceptable, provided the team respects the difficulty of the division.
