Canon adds stabilisation to lighter EOS R8 Mark II full-frame camera
Canon’s EOS R8 Mark II pairs a 24.2-megapixel full-frame sensor with five-axis stabilisation and amateur-focused automatic shooting features.
Canon has announced the EOS R8 Mark II, a full-frame mirrorless camera with a retro-inspired design and five-axis in-body image stabilisation. The company expects the camera to become available in late October, although it has not provided a firm release date.
Pricing starts at US$1,899 for the body, while a bundle with a Canon 24-50mm stabilised lens will cost US$2,099. Regional pricing and availability have not been specified.
The camera uses a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor and an electronic shutter capable of burst shooting at up to 40 frames per second. A pre-continuous shooting mode can capture up to 20 images before the shutter button is pressed.
Canon says the stabilisation system provides up to 7.5 stops of shake correction, with further expansion possible when paired with a stabilised lens. The camera also uses Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system, which the company says offers improved subject tracking and can recognise people, animals and vehicles.
Video recording reaches 4K at 60 frames per second, or up to 180 frames per second at 1080p. For amateur photographers, Canon has included 16 colour filters, automated depth-of-blur controls and creative bracketing.
The EOS R8 Mark II is heavier than the original R8, which launched in 2023 at US$1,499 without in-body stabilisation. Canon also plans to release a free Windows app in October that can create 3D imagery from compatible photos.
