Canada secures historic first World Cup point in Group B draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina
Substitute Cyle Larin’s second-half strike salvages a point for Canada, ending a record of six losses across previous tournament appearances in 1986 and 2022.

Co-host Canada secured its first point in World Cup history with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Group B opener at Toronto’s BMO Field on Friday night. The result marks a significant shift for the national side, ending a winless record of six losses across its previous two tournament appearances in 1986 and 2022.
Bosnia-Herzegovina took the lead in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukic headed in from a corner, sending the small but vocal contingent of supporters into a frenzy. The goal came despite Canada controlling the majority of play in the first half, though they struggled to convert possession into clear-cut opportunities.
Canada missed several high-probability chances to take the lead. In the 17th minute, forward Jonathan David had a clear shot on goal that was comfortably handled by Bosnian goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. Shortly after, in the 30th minute, Ismael Kone sailed a strike well over the net, drawing groans from the crowd of approximately 43,000, which was described as predominantly Canadian.
The second half saw Canada continue to press forward but remain unable to break the deadlock. Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Sead Kolasinac prevented a certain goal by diverting a strike from David onto the crossbar, extending the hosts’ frustration. The stalemate persisted until the 78th minute, when substitute Cyle Larin scored the equaliser, sparking celebrations among the local fans.
The match, held at the home of Major League Soccer club Toronto FC, attracted notable attention from Canadian entertainment figures, including actors Ryan Reynolds and Mike Myers. While the result ends Canada’s historical futility at the World Cup, the team missed multiple opportunities to secure a winning start to their Group B campaign.
