California authorities contain active shooter incident at San Diego mosque
San Diego Police Department confirms significant resources deployed to Islamic Center of San Diego; officer indicates shots fired despite lack of official casualty data.

California law enforcement agencies have deployed significant resources to the Islamic Center of San Diego (ICSD) following reports of an active shooter incident on Monday. The San Diego Police Department described the situation as active but contained, while urging residents to avoid the immediate area to ensure public safety.
The incident occurred at the religious institution located in the Clairemont neighbourhood, a residential area situated north of the city’s downtown. Aerial television footage captured during the response showed a heavy police presence surrounding the mosque, underscoring the scale of the operational deployment.
While there have been no official reports confirming casualties, Associated Press news agency cited San Diego Police Officer Anthony Carrasco as stating he believed people had been shot. The police department has not yet provided corroborating medical or forensic evidence to verify these claims, nor has it disclosed the identity or motive of the individual involved.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria confirmed that emergency personnel are on scene and actively working to secure the area. In a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, Mayor Gloria emphasised that authorities are continuing to receive reports and are focused on protecting the community.
The office of California Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed that the Governor is monitoring the incident and coordinating with local law enforcement agencies. A spokesperson for the Governor expressed gratitude to first responders and urged the public to follow all guidance issued by local authorities as the investigation proceeds.
