Calhanoglu dismisses Turkey transfer speculation, reaffirms Inter Milan commitment
The Turkey captain clarifies that contract renewal discussions are at the discretion of Inter Milan, while highlighting the development of young talent Aleksandar Stanković.
Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu has publicly dismissed transfer speculation linking him with a return to Turkey, firmly reiterating his commitment to the Serie A club. The Turkey national team captain addressed persistent reports connecting him with domestic sides Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray, stating he has no immediate plans to leave Milan where he and his family have settled.
Speaking via Calciomercato.com, Calhanoglu emphasised his satisfaction with his life in Italy. “I’m happy to be here, in Milan, where my wife and I have integrated brilliantly, and at Inter,” he said. He clarified that the timeline for his future remains under the control of the club’s administration, noting there has been no recent contact regarding a contract extension.
“The future doesn’t depend on me, but on the club, because there hasn’t been any contact over the renewal,” Calhanoglu explained. His current agreement with Inter runs until 2027. The midfielder pointed to his achievements over the past five years, including eight trophies and two appearances in the Champions League final, as evidence of the club’s stability and his own contentment.
Addressing the source of the transfer rumours, Calhanoglu attributed the speculation to his role as Turkey’s captain. He noted that informal conversations with club presidents regarding advice on other players can lead to misunderstandings about his own market status. He insisted that his agent handles all professional negotiations, stating, “Honestly, I don’t understand why my name gets dragged into it.”
Looking ahead, Calhanoglu expressed a clear ambition to compete for silverware again, specifically targeting another Champions League final. He also welcomed the maturation of young midfielder Aleksandar Stanković, who is being tipped as a potential future successor. Calhanoglu described the younger player as more mature and better understanding of the game, adding that Stanković still has much to learn from the senior squad.
