Caldwell advances to Division VIII district finals with 10-0 victory
Senior pitcher Makayla Mumaw throws one-hit shutout as Caldwell breaks open game in sixth inning

Top-seeded Caldwell has secured its place in the Division VIII district championship following a decisive 10-0 victory over the No. 3 seed River Pilots. The win, achieved during the district semifinal on Tuesday, May 19, extends the team’s winning streak to nine games and concludes a regular season that finished with a 20-3 record.
Senior pitcher Makayla Mumaw anchored the victory with a one-hit shutout, recording nine strikeouts to neutralise the River Pilots’ offence. Caldwell’s offense complemented the pitching performance by scoring ten runs on seven hits, taking a 4-0 lead through the first five innings before expanding their advantage significantly in the sixth frame.
The game reached a critical juncture in the bottom of the sixth when Caldwell scored six runs in a single inning. This surge triggered the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) tournament mercy rule, bringing the contest to an early conclusion. The result confirms Caldwell’s advancement to the district final, where they will face the No. 4 seed Conotton Valley.
Head coach Scott Davis highlighted the team’s cohesion as a key factor in their postseason success. Davis noted that the squad has settled into their roles effectively, allowing them to perform at a high level during the most critical phase of the tournament. He emphasised the depth of the roster, stating that the team possesses multiple players capable of influencing the outcome rather than relying on a single star.
Offensively, junior Breighlee Moracco led the charge with a double and a single. Cami Arick contributed a single and three runs batted in, while freshmen Mea Hendershot and Cecelia Marshall each recorded an RBI base hit. The balanced attack underscored the team’s ability to execute under pressure, setting the stage for the championship match.
The district championship game is scheduled for Thursday, May 21, at 5 p.m. at Meadowbrook High School in Byesville. The winner of this matchup will secure a berth in the regional tournament, marking the next step in the OHSAA postseason structure for Division VIII softball.
