Byrd High School pair secure scholarships after historic relay victory
The Byrd 4x400m relay team set a school record and claimed the Class 5A state championship, ending a 60-year drought for the program.

Seniors Wyatt Ditt and Markeith Niblett of Byrd High School officially signed track scholarships with Northwestern State University on Wednesday, May 28. The athletes secured their positions with the university following their leadership of the Byrd 4x400m relay team to the LHSAA Class 5A state title at the championships in Baton Rouge. The signings were formalised during a small ceremony at Northwestern State, concluding a period of uncertainty that persisted until the state finals concluded.
The victory at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium marked a significant milestone for Byrd High School, ending a 60-year wait for a 4x400m state championship. The team set a new school record with a time of 3:17.25, a performance that had attracted interest from multiple institutions prior to the finalisation of the deals. Coach Juan Plaza noted that the delay in signing was a strategic decision to allow the athletes' futures to be determined by their performance on the track, with several schools expressing interest only after the team's success became evident.
Ditt and Niblett were supported in the relay effort by teammates Bereket Raines and Jordan Blakes. Ditt also demonstrated individual speed, recording an area best time of 48.32 seconds in the 400-meter event. Niblett, who had only been competing in track for approximately one year, recorded a time of 49.26 seconds, noted as the region’s third-best run. Plaza described Niblett as a quick learner who had blossomed into a significant force on the track under his guidance.
Despite reporting that he was unwell during the championship race, Niblett stated he ran his best race on the second leg of the relay. Ditt reflected on the significance of the team's achievement, noting that they were the first Byrd team to win the 4x400m state championship since 1966. The athletes credited their success to a combination of individual and team goals, which ultimately captured the attention of university coaches.
The event took place within the broader context of the LHSAA Track and Field championships, where Byrd’s performance stood out as a historic moment for the school. The signing with Northwestern State represents the culmination of the athletes' high school careers, transitioning them from local record-breakers to collegiate competitors. The results underscore the impact of sustained effort and strategic coaching in achieving state-level recognition.
