Burnham puts EU rejoining among options for UK’s future relationship
The Labour politician says arrangements from the current relationship to a customs union, single market or EU membership should be assessed for feasibility and trade-offs.
Andy Burnham has included rejoining the European Union among the options to consider in shaping the UK’s future relationship with Europe. His remarks followed a speech at the Labour conference on improving those ties.
Speaking to the BBC’s Today programme, Burnham said the UK could keep its current arrangements, consider a customs union or a single market relationship, or “go all the way” and rejoin the EU.
He said the options should be examined for what is achievable and for their respective advantages and disadvantages.
The comments set out a range for consideration, rather than a commitment to pursue EU membership. The Guardian reported no decision on which arrangement the UK should adopt.
