The Buffalo Sabres have engaged with a dedicated cohort of supporters known as the Blade Gang, who have garnered significant attention for rollerblading to team matches in matching uniforms. This group, comprising nine childhood friends from South Buffalo, has maintained a consistent presence throughout the franchise's first playoff run in 15 years. Members include Sean Maloney, Jack Ellis, Danny Maloney, Alex Pawlik, Ian Macvie, Jackson Soto, Luke Soto, Tommy Maloney, and Michael Bollenbacher.
Following the team's success in the opening round against the Boston Bruins, the group has been perceived by the community as a lucky charm. While the Blade Gang attended a Game 5 loss during the first round, the retrospective association with the series victory has solidified their status as a symbol of local fandom. Their activities have extended beyond attendance, with the group recently invited to dine at Chef's Restaurant, a venue frequently patronised by current and former Sabres players.
The phenomenon has transcended local boundaries, inspiring similar initiatives in other markets. A group of Montreal Canadiens fans has reportedly scheduled a comparable event, adopting the model established by the Buffalo supporters. This replication suggests the Blade Gang has created a new template for fan engagement within the National Hockey League.
In response to the group's visibility, Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan has proposed a formal collaboration to utilise the Blade Gang for institutional morale. The Mayor indicated an interest in organising a skate from City Hall to the arena, effectively integrating the fans into the official narrative of the playoff campaign. This proposal reflects a broader effort by city leadership to leverage community assets during the team's historic campaign.
