The transaction was reported by multiple US media outlets, including ESPN, on Monday, 23 June 2026, and was finalised by Bucks general manager Jon Horst and Heat general manager Andy Elisburg. The deal is scheduled for official execution on 6 July.
In exchange for Antetokounmpo and Portis, the Heat acquired guards Tyler Herro and Kel’el Ware, along with forwards Jaime Jaquez Jr and Kasparas Jakucionis. Milwaukee’s compensation package includes three first-round picks, notably the No. 13 selection in the 2026 NBA draft, one pick swap, and a second-round pick. The acquisition marks a significant strategic pivot for the Bucks, who determined they could not construct another championship-calibre team around their franchise icon.
The trade ends over a year of speculation regarding Antetokounmpo’s future, following public frustration with the Bucks’ management over roster construction and his availability. The 31-year-old had openly criticised the front office after being declared unavailable for a game due to a left knee hyperextension, insisting he was fit to help force a playoff push. His comments came after Milwaukee missed the playoffs entirely in the 2025-2026 season with a 32-50 record, winning only one playoff series since their 2021 championship.
Antetokounmpo, who was drafted by the Bucks in 2013, has been a 10-time All-Star and led the team to an NBA title in 2021. Reports indicate that he preferred Miami and is expected to sign a long-term extension with the Heat. The move concludes the uncertainty surrounding the player, who entered the final year of his contract and had voiced dissatisfaction with the team’s direction in recent months.
