Bucks trade Giannis Antetokounmpo to Heat in landmark one-to-one deal
The franchise icon joins Bam Adebayo in Miami, ending a year-long saga that saw the Bucks reject a package from Boston to secure long-term flexibility.
The Milwaukee Bucks have traded franchise icon Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat in a one-to-one deal finalised on 23 June 2026 and scheduled for execution on 6 July. In exchange, Milwaukee receives Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks including the No. 13 selection in the 2026 NBA draft, one pick swap, and one second-round pick. The transaction concludes a contentious saga lasting over a year, during which Antetokounmpo repeatedly requested a move, citing the Bucks' inability to compete.
The Heat, who finished 10th in the Eastern Conference last season, now pair Antetokounmpo with Bam Adebayo. The move significantly alters the competitive landscape, with the Heat’s title odds shortening from 30-1 to 18-1 following the announcement. Antetokounmpo’s agent, Alex Saratsis, confirmed that the superstar and his representatives consistently informed the Bucks from May 2025 through May 2026 that Antetokounmpo wanted a trade, stating the franchise was not in a position to compete.
Milwaukee’s general manager Jon Horst engaged in serious negotiations with two preferred destinations for the superstar: the Heat and the Boston Celtics. The Celtics offered a package featuring 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown and two first-round picks. However, the Bucks rejected this offer in favour of the Heat’s proposal, which provided more flexibility and a big-picture approach with controlled contracts. This decision allows new coach Taylor Jenkins to build a roster focused on long-term competitiveness rather than relying on a veteran, win-now superstar.
The trade marks a significant shift for both organisations. Antetokounmpo spent 13 seasons in Milwaukee, becoming a 10-time All-Star, two-time MVP, and the 2021 Finals MVP who led the team to its first championship in 50 years. Despite averaging 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game when healthy last season, he played in a career-low 36 games due to injuries. The Bucks are now acquiring young talent and draft capital to rebuild, while Antetokounmpo joins an elite list of Miami pickups including LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal.
The agreement was finalised by Horst and Heat general manager Andy Elisburg on Monday night. The deal leaves the framework open for potential expansion, as both teams will execute the trade on July 6. This move ends an awkward period for the Bucks, who missed the playoffs entirely last season at 32-50 and have won only one playoff series since their 2021 title. Antetokounmpo, who has one guaranteed year left on his contract ahead of a 2027 player option, now heads to Miami after a year of discord that included an NBA investigation into his shutdown request.
