Bucks trade Giannis Antetokounmpo to Heat in landmark deal
Two-time MVP and Bobby Portis head to Miami in exchange for Tyler Herro, young assets and multiple future first-round picks
The Milwaukee Bucks have traded two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat, ending a decade-long era in Milwaukee. The transaction, reported by ESPN insider Shams Charania and finalised by general managers Jon Horst and Andy Elisburg on Monday night, sees the Bucks acquire Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, the No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 draft, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a first-round pick swap in 2030, and a second-round pick in 2033.
The decision marks a strategic pivot for the Bucks, who determined they could not construct another championship-calibre team around Antetokounmpo. The franchise missed the playoffs entirely last season with a 32-50 record and has won only one playoff series since their 2021 title. Antetokounmpo, who enters the final year of his contract, reportedly preferred Miami and is expected to sign a long-term extension with the Heat.
Milwaukee rejected a competing offer from the Boston Celtics headlined by Jaylen Brown, opting instead for the Heat’s proposal which offered greater flexibility and a big-picture approach with controlled contracts. The move addresses a roster ceiling for Miami, who missed the playoffs for the first time since 2019 last season after reaching the NBA Finals in 2023.
The trade leaves the Heat with a formidable frontcourt pairing of Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, but significant questions remain regarding the supporting cast. With Norman Powell an unrestricted free agent and Andrew Wiggins holding a player option, Miami faces the pressure to quickly transform the roster into a contender. The Heat are known for developing role players, but the risk remains high if Antetokounmpo’s health issues, which have plagued him in recent playoffs, persist.
For the Bucks, the return represents a comprehensive rebuild package. General manager Jon Horst secured multiple future assets, including the 2030 pick swap and unprotected first-rounders in 2031 and 2033, while acquiring young talent like Ware and Jakucionis. The deal is scheduled for execution on 6 July 2026, closing a chapter that began with awkward negotiations after Antetokounmpo resisted trade offers for years.
