Bucks co-owner sets six-week window for Giannis Antetokounmpo future decision
Following a season that ended with a 32-50 record, Milwaukee management has narrowed the timeline for determining the superstar's status with the franchise.
Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam has established a specific timeframe for determining the future of superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, stating that discussions regarding the player's status will occur over the next six or seven weeks. This decision window is designed to conclude ahead of the June 23 NBA draft, providing a clear deadline for the organisation to decide whether to retain the star or move him.
The urgency of the situation stems from a season where the franchise finished with a 32-50 record, marking their lowest win total since Antetokounmpo's rookie campaign and resulting in a missed playoff appearance for the first time since 2021. While Antetokounmpo was not involved in the hiring process for new head coach Taylor Jenkins, the two have since established communication, with Jenkins noting the player has expressed tremendous excitement for the new leadership.
General Manager Jon Horst confirmed that the player was not part of the selection process for Jenkins, emphasising that the hire was focused on building a sustainable culture and identity for the team. Despite this separation in the hiring phase, Haslam reiterated that the organisation understands the gravity of the decision, acknowledging that Antetokounmpo has brought Milwaukee its second championship and first in 50 years.
The financial implications of the decision are significant, with Antetokounmpo having two years and $121.2 million remaining on his contract. This figure includes a $62.7 million player option for the following summer, meaning the front office must determine if they wish to retain his services or absorb the substantial cost of a potential trade.
Trade rumours have persisted for several seasons, with reports of discussions between the Bucks and the New York Knicks emerging last summer. Although Antetokounmpo has previously stated he would not request a trade, leaving the choice to the front office, the team has failed to compete for a championship in three of the last six years, partly due to injuries and a lack of roster improvement following Khris Middleton's decline.
Haslam indicated that the final call will be made by himself, General Manager Jon Horst, Head Coach Taylor Jenkins, and co-owner Wes Edens. The organisation aims to resolve the uncertainty before the draft, ensuring they have clarity on whether Antetokounmpo will sign a new max contract in October or depart the franchise.
