Browns weigh three-quarterback option for Week 1 against Jaguars
Coach Todd Monken says rookie Taylen Green could feature in an offensive package, but Cleveland has not confirmed a change to its quarterback hierarchy.
Cleveland Browns coach Todd Monken has left open the possibility of using rookie quarterback Taylen Green in an offensive package during the team’s Week 1 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Deshaun Watson has been named Cleveland’s starter, with Shedeur Sanders as his backup. Green could also be active, although Monken’s comments did not confirm that he will play or replace Sanders in the quarterback order.
Using all three quarterbacks would require Cleveland to devote an active roster spot to Green. It would also prevent the Browns from using the emergency third-quarterback provision if Watson and Sanders were unavailable during the game.
Green joined the roster after Dillon Gabriel was placed on injured reserve with a back injury. The sixth-round selection from Arkansas previously played at Boise State and has been sharing scout-team quarterback repetitions with Sanders as the pair continue their development.
His athletic ability was evident in Cleveland’s preseason finale against New England, when he ran eight times for 66 yards and completed five of seven passes for 27 yards. Monken has described Green as a highly athletic and intelligent player with room to develop.
The possibility may give Jacksonville another element to prepare for, but the Browns’ comments do not establish whether the plan reflects tactical intent, gamesmanship or Green’s progress within the quarterback group, Yahoo Sports reported.
