Head coach Todd Monken confirms Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders will compete for starting role through fall

Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken has confirmed that the starting quarterback competition between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders remains unresolved and will likely extend into training camp. Speaking to reporters at mandatory minicamp, Monken stated he would not name a starter by the end of the event, noting that both players have performed well enough to earn the right to compete for the position.

Monken acknowledged that while he had hoped to identify a quarterback earlier in the offseason, the current evaluations lack the necessary physical context. He explained that the decision is difficult because the team has not yet practiced with pads on, engaged in controlled scrimmages, or played preseason games. "I just can't do it," Monken said, emphasising that neither player has separated themselves significantly in the current environment.

Watson, a three-time Pro Bowler who has not received that recognition since the 2020 season, and Sanders, who started the final seven games of the 2025 campaign, are both considered starting-level options. Sanders helped the Browns secure three of their five wins during that stretch, although he recorded more interceptions than touchdown passes and posted a sub-60% completion percentage.

Dillon Gabriel sits as the third option on the depth chart. A third-round draft pick, Gabriel started six games as a rookie before suffering a concussion, which led to Sanders taking over the lineup. Taylen Green, a sixth-round rookie, is also on the roster but is considered a developmental prospect.

Monken noted that while he previously described the competition as not strictly a "two-man race," he now believes the Browns possess two starting-level quarterbacks. The coach indicated that the final decision will be made after evaluating reps in the fall, likely during training camp or preseason games, once live contact is introduced.
