British tennis hopes extinguished as Norrie exits Italian Open
Norrie's second-round collapse in Rome leaves no British representatives in the men's singles draw, following earlier exits for Katie Boulter and absences for Draper, Raducanu and Kartal.
Cameron Norrie has ended his campaign at the Italian Open in Rome after a straight-sets defeat to Argentina's Thiago Agustin Tirante. The British number one, seeded 17th and ranked 19th in the world, lost the match 6-3 7-5, a result that terminates all British involvement in the men's singles competition at the tournament.
The encounter concluded in just 34 minutes, with Tirante, who holds a career-best ranking of 69th, securing a decisive advantage in the opening set. Norrie found himself immediately under pressure, losing his first service game before trailing 3-0. The Argentine, currently Argentina's seventh-highest ranked men's player, served out the set to take control of the match.
The second set proved more competitive, with both players holding serve until the 25-year-old Tirante broke at 6-5. He subsequently delivered a match-clinching service game to love, leaving Norrie with no opportunity to recover. This defeat marks a significant setback for British tennis on the clay courts, following Norrie's previous appearance in the last-16 of the Madrid Open last month.
The exit of Norrie means there are now no British players remaining in the men's singles draw. This development follows an earlier loss in the women's singles, where Katie Boulter was defeated by Germany's Eva Lys in the first round on Wednesday. Consequently, the British contingent has been completely eliminated from the singles action in Rome.
Several other prominent British stars are also absent from the tournament this year. Jack Draper, Emma Raducanu and Sonay Kartal are not participating due to various injury and illness issues. Their absence, combined with Norrie's and Boulter's exits, has left the British team with no representation in the event.
Tirante will advance to the third round of the tournament. His next opponent will be determined by the outcome of other matches, with the Argentine set to face either Italy's 10th seed Flavio Cobolli or France's Terence Atmane.
