British cyclist Adam Yates withdrawn from Giro d'Italia following mass crash concussion
Team-mates Jay Vine and Marc Soler also suffer serious injuries in wet descent incident involving 30 riders
Adam Yates has been withdrawn from the Giro d'Italia after sustaining a concussion in a significant crash involving approximately 30 riders. The incident occurred on Saturday during a stage to Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria, which took place on a wet descent where Yates struck a barrier at high speed. Despite initially finishing the stage, the British rider subsequently displayed delayed concussive symptoms, resulting in a fourteen-minute loss to the leaders.
UAE Team Emirates-XRG confirmed that Yates will not take the start of stage three. The team issued a statement detailing that the rider suffered heavy abrasions and a laceration to his left ear in addition to the head injury. Although Yates was initially assessed on site and cleared to continue riding, he later exhibited signs of a concussion, prompting the decision to pull him from the remainder of the event.
The crash also resulted in serious injuries for two of Yates' team-mates. Jay Vine of Australia sustained a concussion and an elbow fracture, while Marc Soler of Spain suffered a pelvic fracture. All three riders—Yates, Vine, and Soler—are to be kept under observation by medical staff before travelling home to recover in the coming days.
This development marks the first Grand Tour that Yates has contested which he will not finish, despite his record of seven top-10 finishes in Grand Tour races overall. The incident represents a significant interruption to the team's campaign, particularly given the context of the race being won last year by Yates' twin brother, Simon Yates.
Currently, Guillermo Silva Thomas of Uruguay leads the Giro d'Italia following two stages. The long-term prognosis for Yates' recovery and his potential future participation in the remainder of the race or subsequent Grand Tours remains uncertain pending further medical assessment. The full extent of the injuries sustained by Vine and Soler and their respective recovery timelines also remain to be determined.
