Power Rankings: NL domination and rising AL wild-card contenders

The Milwaukee Brewers have retained the No. 1 position in the Major League Baseball Power Rankings for the second consecutive week, according to ESPN. The Brewers extended their lead in the National League Central to five games after winning three of four against the Los Angeles Dodgers, a result that provided crucial separation from the Chicago Cubs. This performance followed a 22-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners, cementing their status as the league’s leading team.

In the National League, the Atlanta Braves have moved up to the No. 3 position, overtaking the Tampa Bay Rays. The Braves’ rise is underpinned by the strong performance of left-hander Chris Sale, who has benefited from a structured rest schedule since the start of the season. Meanwhile, the San Diego Padres have surged to No. 9 following an 8-2 winning run that has propelled them into the third spot in the NL wild-card race. This offensive turnaround has seen San Diego’s scoring pace improve significantly, moving their run differential into positive territory.

The American League has seen significant movement in the lower rankings, with the Baltimore Orioles emerging as the week’s biggest risers. The Orioles have jumped from No. 22 to No. 16, firmly establishing themselves in the AL wild-card race. This ascent is attributed in part to the successful first season of Pete Alonso, who leads the AL in games played and is on pace for over 35 home runs and 100 runs batted in.

The Toronto Blue Jays have also climbed five spots to No. 18, joining the competition for the final AL wild-card berth. The team’s resurgence is highlighted by the offensive production of catcher Alejandro Kirk, who has been batting .364 with a .557 slugging percentage since the All-Star break. Kirk’s performance underscores the impact of his return after a two-month absence due to a thumb injury earlier in the season.

Other notable movements include the Arizona Diamondbacks dropping two spots to No. 11, while the San Francisco Giants’ Logan Webb continues to post consistent numbers with a 2.56 ERA over six second-half starts. In Cleveland, the Guardians’ bullpen has struggled with a 4.47 ERA since the All-Star break, ranking 22nd in MLB. The Kansas City Royals have also seen a lineup stabilisation, with Maikel Garcia and Vinnie Pasquantino activated from the injured list to join Bobby Witt Jr. for the first time since June 13.
