Brewers reshape rotation with acquisition of McCullers and Gordon from Astros

The Milwaukee Brewers have executed a significant roster adjustment, acquiring right-handed pitcher Lance McCullers Jr and left-hander Colton Gordon from the Houston Astros. Brewers general manager Matt Arnold announced the transaction on Wednesday, confirming that the club sent outfield prospect Jadyn Fielder and cash to Houston in exchange for the two pitchers. The move represents a strategic effort to stabilise the team’s starting rotation ahead of the final stretch of the regular season.
To accommodate the new additions on the 40-man roster, Milwaukee placed left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny on the 60-day injured list. The acquisition addresses immediate structural vulnerabilities within the pitching staff, which has been significantly impacted by injuries to key starters. Two-time All-Star Brandon Woodruff remains on the 60-day injured list following surgical repair for an anterior capsule injury, while left-hander Kyle Harrison was placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday with forearm tightness.
McCullers, 32, brings substantial institutional history to Milwaukee, having spent his entire career with the Astros since being selected as a first-round pick in 2012. He is currently in the final season of a five-year, $85 million contract. Over 154 major league games, McCullers holds a 53-40 record with a 3.85 ERA. His career has been marked by significant injury challenges, including Tommy John surgery in 2018 and a missed 2019 season, followed by surgery in 2023 that kept him out through the 2024 campaign. This season, he posted a 2-3 record with a 6.86 ERA in eight starts before being placed on the 15-day injured list on May 19 with right shoulder inflammation.
Colton Gordon, 27, offers a different profile for the Brewers, having made his major league debut in 2025. He is under team control until 2028 and holds a 6-4 record with a 5.34 ERA across 20 games for Houston. Gordon has started 14 games for the Astros in 2025, recording 72 strikeouts and 19 walks. His inclusion adds depth to a rotation that enters the All-Star break with a 3.48 team ERA, the second-best in the majors behind only the New York Yankees.
The trade comes as the Brewers hold a five-game lead in the NL Central but trail the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers by 1.5 games in the broader league standings. The acquisition of Fielder, 21, provides Houston with a young prospect who made his professional debut in 2025 and was competing in Class A prior to the swap. The son of former Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder, Fielder’s departure marks the end of his early professional development under Milwaukee’s system.
