Tom Brady has moved to settle the debate surrounding the Los Angeles Rams’ performance in Australia, arguing that on-field execution is the definitive metric of success rather than travel logistics. Speaking in the season-opening edition of his #AskTom mailbag, the broadcaster dismissed the prevailing narrative that the Rams were disadvantaged by jet lag following their short flight to Melbourne.
The Rams arrived in Melbourne just over 24 hours before kickoff, a timeline that drew significant scrutiny in the lead-up to the NFL Australia opener. By contrast, the San Francisco 49ers had arrived in Australia more than a week prior to the match to acclimatise. Despite the disparity in preparation time, the 49ers secured a dominant 27-7 victory over the Rams, who had been listed as 3.5-point favourites in the lead-up to the game.
Brady suggested that the focus on travel was a distraction from the fundamental requirements of the sport. He noted that while factors such as travel and food can contribute to better execution, the ultimate test occurs when players step onto the field to complete passes, make blocks, and execute tackles. For Brady, the ability to play good football is the only factor that truly matters.
Beyond the travel controversy, the former quarterback provided a technical breakdown of NFL operations, clarifying the distinction between a full playbook and a game-specific call sheet. He explained that a standard playbook contains approximately 1,500 to 2,000 different calls, which are narrowed down to 100 to 120 for a specific matchup.
Brady detailed that only 65 to 70 of those selected plays are typically called during a game. He emphasised that this curation is an arduous process involving continuous conversations to segment plays into the right categories, ensuring that the head coach can quickly identify and relay the correct call during in-game adjustments.
