Brewers end skid with Mitchell’s walk-off single in 10th
Garrett Mitchell delivers third career walk-off hit after key defensive play; Craig Yoho secures first major league win
The Milwaukee Brewers concluded a three-game losing streak on Friday night with a 2-1 victory over the Miami Marlins, secured by a late-inning offensive surge and strong pitching relief. Garrett Mitchell delivered his third career walk-off hit, a two-out single up the middle in the 10th inning that scored Jackson Chourio from second base.
The dramatic conclusion followed a crucial defensive effort by Mitchell in the top of the 10th, where he made a running catch of a sharp liner from Joe Mack to end the inning. He then faced Miami’s Lake Bachar, who improved to 1-1 on the season, to deliver the decisive hit. Craig Yoho, the sixth pitcher used by Milwaukee, pitched a scoreless 10th inning to record his first major league win, improving to 1-0.
The contest remained scoreless until the fifth inning, a period defined by exceptional defensive play from both squads. Marlins All-Star shortstop Otto Lopez made a sliding, run-saving catch of a popup by Brewers right fielder Sal Frelick to end the second inning. In the fourth, Brewers second baseman Brice Turang ranged far to his right to rob Kyle Stowers of a hit and an RBI.
Offensive production began in the fifth when Griffin Conine hit a solo home run off Brewers starter Logan Henderson. Conine has now hit home runs in three of his last five games. Milwaukee responded in the bottom half of the inning when Joey Ortiz connected for a solo shot off Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara to tie the game at 1-1.
Alcantara pitched six innings, allowing one run and three hits while striking out seven and walking four. The performance marked his league-leading 15th quality start and moved him into a tie with Ricky Nolasco for the most quality starts in Marlins history with 110. Henderson pitched five innings for Milwaukee, allowing one run and three hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Frelick left the game in the fifth inning due to right shoulder soreness. Miami’s Max Meyer (9-1, 2.58 ERA) and Milwaukee’s Shane Drohan (4-3, 3.09 ERA) are scheduled to start the next game on Saturday.
