Brazil election heads to run-off after Bolsonaro leads Lula

Brazil’s presidential election will go to a run-off in three weeks after neither candidate secured a majority in Sunday’s vote, France 24 reported.

Right-wing senator Flávio Bolsonaro finished ahead of incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with 47 per cent of the vote to Lula’s 45 per cent, the broadcaster said.

The result leaves the contest between the two candidates unresolved. Voters will return to decide the presidency in the run-off.

France 24 correspondent Tim Vickery described Bolsonaro as being in a “very strong position” ahead of the decisive vote. That assessment does not settle the outcome of the run-off.
