Braves extend winning streak to eight with sweep of Marlins

The Atlanta Braves secured their eighth consecutive victory on Thursday night, defeating the Miami Marlins 11-3 at Truist Park to complete a three-game series sweep. The win extends Atlanta’s dominance in the National League East, where they currently hold an 8.5-game lead over the second-place Philadelphia Phillies. The team now travels to New York to face the Yankees.

The game was defined by the performance of Ronald Acuña Jr., who hit two home runs. In the third inning, Acuña launched a two-run shot that deflected over the left-center field wall following a collision between Marlins outfielders Heriberto Hernández and Esteury Ruiz. The ball ricocheted off the gloves of both players, who had converged on the warning track, before clearing the fence.

Marlins outfielder Esteury Ruiz explained the miscommunication through an interpreter, stating he initially believed the ball was leaving the park but realised it would stay in play. Both Ruiz and Hernández shouted that they had the ball, but the crowd noise prevented them from hearing each other. The incident resulted in a significant momentum shift, with the Braves crowd celebrating the unorthodox score.

Acuña added a solo home run in the eighth inning, which travelled 337 feet into the field-field seats. He described the second home run as "special" because it did not require external assistance, unlike the first. Acuña has homered in four of his past 28 at-bats, bringing his season total to 11 long balls. This resurgence follows a period where he missed 38 consecutive games earlier in the season due to hamstring issues.

The Braves (70-45) improved their standing with the victory, while the Marlins (58-58) saw their season record remain at .500. Acuña, the 2023 National League Most Valuable Player, has been a key factor in Atlanta’s recent success. Braves first baseman Matt Olson noted the importance of having Acuña back in the lineup and swinging effectively after his injury absence.
