Atlanta secures 13th series win in 15 attempts

The Atlanta Braves have reinforced their position at the top of the standings, securing a series victory against the Boston Red Sox with an 8-1 win on Sunday. The result marks the first-place Braves’ 13th series win in 15 attempts this season, highlighting a level of operational consistency that has defined their campaign. Atlanta took two of three games from Boston, leaving them with only one series loss and a single split across a four-game set.

Offensive output was anchored by Austin Riley, who launched a three-run home run in the first inning. The 431-foot shot was Riley’s seventh of the season, providing an early structural advantage for Atlanta. Mike Yastrzemski extended the lead with a leadoff home run in the fourth inning, continuing a strong hitting streak. Riley further consolidated the advantage in the fifth by doubling and scoring on a Dominic Smith single, pushing the score to 7-0.

On the mound, Grant Holmes delivered a decisive performance, pitching six scoreless innings to secure the win. Holmes, improving to 3-1, allowed five hits and issued one walk in an 87-pitch effort. Reynaldo López provided additional stability by adding two scoreless innings, while Tyler Kinley closed out the game, allowing Boston’s only run with two outs in the ninth.

The Red Sox struggled to find footing against Holmes and the Braves’ defence, particularly in the early innings where they fell behind 5-0. Starter Brayan Bello took the loss on his 27th birthday, continuing a difficult transition back to the starting rotation. Bello has now allowed 33 earned runs in 30 1/3 innings as a starter, despite recent success in relief appearances.

Boston catcher Carlos Narváez was removed from the game due to finger pain, a setback that compounded the team’s difficulties. The match was briefly interrupted by a sudden downpour in the top of the sixth, causing a 33-minute delay, though play resumed quickly after the tarp was deployed. Ozzie Albies ended a prolonged 0-for-24 hitless streak, the second longest of his career, but it was insufficient to alter the outcome.

Looking ahead, the Braves will maintain their momentum by facing the Miami Marlins in a four-game series opener on Monday night, with JR Ritchie set to start against Max Meyer. The Red Sox, meanwhile, begin a three-game road series at Kansas City, with Sonny Gray taking the mound against Seth Lugo.
