Braves’ Baldwin adopts cautious timeline for return, diverging from Weiss’ homestand projection
Atlanta’s catching rotation faces uncertainty as Baldwin’s recovery pace differs from front office expectations, with backup options struggling offensively.
Atlanta Braves manager Walt Weiss has indicated that catcher Drake Baldwin could return during the upcoming homestand, scheduled for June 16–21, following a diagnosis of a Grade 1 right oblique strain. The projection comes as the Braves seek to restore offensive stability to their lineup, with Weiss suggesting the reigning National League Rookie of the Year is nearing readiness for game action.
However, Baldwin has adopted a more measured approach to his rehabilitation, reporting that he has not yet been cleared for dry swings. The catcher stated he has only recently begun engaging in baseball activities and is not targeting a specific return date. This cautious stance contrasts with Weiss’ optimism regarding a mid-June activation, highlighting a divergence in timelines between the dugout and the player.
The injury occurred on Monday during a 12–0 loss to the Miami Marlins, when Baldwin reported slight discomfort after his second at-bat. Although the initial sensation was not deemed painful enough to warrant immediate removal, an MRI conducted on Tuesday confirmed the oblique strain, leading to his placement on the 10-day injured list. Backup catcher Sandy Leon replaced him in the sixth inning of that contest.
The Braves’ need for Baldwin’s offensive production has intensified in his absence. Backup catchers Sandy Leon and Chadwick Tromp have failed to impress at the plate, creating a vacuum in the lineup’s middle order. Additionally, Brian Murphy is dealing with injuries, increasing the likelihood that Baldwin will resume regular catching duties upon his return to the active roster.
Despite the team’s recent success, including clinching a series against the Toronto Blue Jays to secure their 42nd win of the season, the front office remains mindful of the player’s health. While Weiss expressed confidence in a near-term return, Baldwin’s lack of a definitive timeline suggests a priority on thorough recovery over rapid reintegration into the rotation.
