Brandon Clarke, Memphis Grizzlies Forward, Dies at 29 Following Emergency Call
Clarke, a dual citizen born in Vancouver, had played only two games this season due to injury. Local reports indicate he was pronounced dead at a home in California's San Fernando Valley.

The Memphis Grizzlies have confirmed the death of forward Brandon Clarke, a 29-year-old member of the National Basketball Association. The team and his representation firm, Priority Sports, issued statements expressing their devastation but have not released an official cause of death. Local media reports indicate that Clarke was pronounced dead at a residence in California's San Fernando Valley following an emergency call for help.
Clarke, who was born in Vancouver, Canada, and holds dual citizenship, spent his entire professional career with the Grizzlies. Selected 21st overall in the 2019 NBA draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder, he was traded to Memphis immediately and played 309 career games for the franchise. His tenure included being named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2020, where he averaged 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds in his debut season.
Recent performance metrics show a sharp decline in availability due to physical condition. Clarke played just two games during the 2025–26 season after suffering a torn left Achilles tendon in March 2023. Injuries to his knee, calf, and Achilles restricted him to 72 of a possible 246 games over the past three seasons, averaging 10.2 points and 5.5 rebounds during his seven seasons with the organisation.
The circumstances surrounding his passing follow a legal incident in Arkansas earlier this year. Clarke was arrested on 1 April on charges of speeding and possession of a controlled substance, which local media reports identified as kratom. He was released on bond the following day. While the timing of the arrest and the death are proximate, no official connection has been established by authorities or the Grizzlies.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver released a statement describing Clarke as a beloved teammate and leader who played the game with passion and grit. The NBPA and the Grizzlies organisation have both issued formal condolences, noting the tragic loss of a player who was an outstanding teammate and a significant figure within the Memphis community.
As of publication, the specific details regarding the emergency call and the medical circumstances leading to Clarke's death remain unconfirmed by local police or coroner findings. The focus of the investigation and public mourning remains on the confirmed fact of his passing at age 29.
