Bradford City edge Burnley on penalties to advance in Carabao Cup
The League One side held their Championship opponents to a goalless draw at Valley Parade before securing a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory.
Bradford City have progressed to the third round of the Carabao Cup after defeating Burnley 4-2 on penalties following a 0-0 draw at Valley Parade. The result extends the difficult start to the season for the Championship club, who had previously fallen to West Bromwich Albion.
Burnley head coach Nicky Hayen implemented nine changes to the starting lineup compared with the side that faced West Brom on Sunday. Despite these adjustments, the visitors controlled possession early on, forcing Bradford goalkeeper Jon McCracken to tip over a well-struck drive from Connor Roberts.
The League One side, who had kept clean sheets in their first three league games, defended solidly against the pressure. Reece Welch denied Zeki Amdouni from close range, while McCracken remained alert to save further attempts from the Clarets.
The match opened up in the second half, with Bradford creating more threats. Gregoire Coudert saved from Adam Phillips, and Josh Laurent cleared a header from Macaulay Gillesphey off the line for Burnley. McCracken also denied Laurent and Ugo Raghouber as the game became more open.
The penalty shoot-out proved decisive, with McCracken saving the first attempt from Jacob Bruun Larsen. Zeki Amdouni struck the post with his penalty, and the Clarets missed two spot-kicks in total, allowing Bradford to secure the tie.
