Boxing schedule reshuffled as Moses Itauma bout delayed to clear path for Joshua return

British heavyweight prospect Moses Itauma has been forced to wait longer for his next professional engagement after his scheduled bout was officially rescheduled from 25 July to 8 August. The decision, confirmed by promoter Frank Warren, was made to prevent a direct scheduling conflict with Anthony Joshua's return fight against Kristian Prenga in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which is also set for 25 July.

While the specific date for Itauma's return has been secured, the identity of his next opponent remains undisclosed. Warren stated that while potential candidates are being considered, no contract has been signed and he prefers not to speculate until a deal is finalised. The venue for the rescheduled 8 August contest has likewise not been confirmed in available reports.

The rescheduling decision appears driven by strategic considerations regarding audience attention rather than logistical impossibility. Warren noted that while a head-to-head scheduling conflict was theoretically possible, the choice was made to avoid clashing with Joshua's high-profile return. This approach prioritises the momentum of the established heavyweight champion ahead of a potential future showdown with Tyson Fury later in the year.

Itauma, a 21-year-old with an unblemished record of 14 professional contests, had been building significant momentum following a dominant fifth-round knockout victory over Jermaine Franklin in March. That performance marked the first time the prospect had been taken beyond the second round since 2023, highlighting the difficulty in securing ring time for a rising talent in the heavyweight division.

The delay means the young British fighter will miss his original slot at London's O2 Arena. Although the promoter emphasised that the move is simply a matter of moving forward with the current schedule, the postponement underscores the fluid nature of boxing calendars when major international events are involved.
