Bo Nix returns to Broncos action with touchdown pass
Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix completed six of nine passes for 76 yards, including a score to RJ Harvey, in his first game since sustaining an ankle fracture in the divisional playoffs.
Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix returned to the field for his first game since breaking his ankle in last season’s divisional playoffs, appearing in a preseason match against the Green Bay Packers on Friday night. Nix had been held out of the previous preseason opener due to concerns regarding the artificial turf playing surface.
In his limited return, Nix completed six of nine passes for 76 yards. His performance included a 21-yard touchdown pass to running back RJ Harvey, which concluded a first-quarter drive. The touchdown came after Nix connected with new receiver Jaylen Waddle for a 35-yard gain over the middle on a third-and-five situation.
The Broncos acquired Waddle from the Dolphins this offseason in exchange for a first-round pick. The connection between Nix and Waddle was a focal point of the game, with the new receiver making a significant catch early in the contest. Nix also attempted a pass to Courtland Sutton on his first play, which was incomplete as Sutton was out of bounds, but the play demonstrated his mobility in the pocket.
Nix remained in the game for a second drive that extended into the second quarter. The Broncos scored a field goal on that possession before Nix was replaced by a backup. His final statistics for the evening stood at six completions on nine attempts for 76 yards.
The return to action addresses lingering questions about Nix’s health following a season-ending injury. Last season, Broncos head coach Sean Payton announced in the media room that Nix had a broken ankle and would require surgery after a divisional playoff win over the Bills. The Broncos subsequently lost the AFC title game to the Patriots with Jarrett Stidham at quarterback.
Nix has stated there are no lingering issues with his ankle, and his performance in the preseason game provided a visual confirmation of his readiness. With the team retaining most of its roster from a 14-3 campaign last season, the Broncos are now positioned to begin the regular season with their starting quarterback.
