Bluesky executives to pitch social media reboot at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026
As incumbents face scrutiny over AI-dominated content, Bluesky positions its open protocol model as a viable alternative for the next generation of social networking.

Bluesky chief executive Toni Schneider and chief operating officer Rose Wang are set to present at TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 in San Francisco, where they will argue that social media is poised for a fundamental restart. The session, scheduled for the event running from 13 to 15 October at Moscone West, will examine whether the industry can move beyond the current paradigm and how Bluesky fits into a potential reboot built on open protocols.
Schneider assumed the role of permanent chief executive following a four-month interim period, succeeding founding chief executive Jay Graber, who transitioned to chief innovation officer. Schneider stated in an announcement that the company is at the very beginning of its story, with a decade of work ahead to build an open web that supports how people connect, communicate, and build livelihoods.
The presentation comes as Bluesky and similar platforms navigate a transitional moment in the social media landscape. Following the transformation of Twitter into X, these emerging networks are testing whether communities can be retained on open protocols while clawing market share from entrenched incumbents. The broader context includes significant milestones in the artificial intelligence sector, with both Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT recently surpassing one billion monthly active users.
Rose Wang, who has been with Bluesky since 2021 and previously led customer experience at Forethought AI, will address the platform’s focus on human-to-human connection. Wang has characterised major incumbents such as Facebook and X as essentially AI companies that are too large to pivot easily. She argues that the current deluge of AI-filled feeds has created a growing demand for authentic social interaction, positioning Bluesky as a necessary alternative.
The discussion at Disrupt is part of a wider programme for founders, investors, and technologists, featuring networking opportunities and the Startup Battlefield competition. As the industry evaluates the viability of open standards against dominant AI-driven models, Bluesky’s leadership aims to demonstrate how their operational strategy addresses the need for a more user-centric social infrastructure.
