Blue Origin Secures $10 Billion in First External Funding, Valued at $130 Billion
Jeff Bezos and Coatue Management lead round as commercial space sector intensifies following SpaceX’s record-breaking initial public offering.

Blue Origin has secured $10 billion in external funding for the first time in its 25-year history, establishing a corporate valuation of $130 billion. The investment round, which marks a significant shift for the company founded by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, comprises a $2 billion contribution from Bezos himself, $4 billion from asset manager Coatue Management, and the remaining $4 billion from large institutional investors.
The capital injection arrives as the commercial space market intensifies, driven by increased government contracts and growing demand for space-based infrastructure linked to artificial intelligence growth. The announcement follows closely on the heels of SpaceX’s recent record initial public offering, which raised nearly $86 billion and significantly elevated the competitive landscape for private space enterprises.
While the funding validates Blue Origin’s market position, analysts note that SpaceX retains a substantial operational lead. This advantage is evidenced by higher launch frequencies and the established Starlink satellite service. William Blair recently increased its valuation of SpaceX’s rocket launch business to $546 billion, describing the enterprise as at least triple the combined valuations of Blue Origin, Rocket Lab, and Firefly Aerospace.
The new valuation provides a clearer benchmark for future financing opportunities, allowing potential investors to compare Blue Origin against other private space companies. However, the long-term impact on competitive positioning remains speculative, with SpaceX maintaining a decade-long lead in development according to analyst Louie DiPalma at William Blair.
Institutional interest in the sector remains robust, with ARK Invest increasing its holdings in SpaceX last week. As of Friday, SpaceX comprised 4.33 per cent of the ARK Innovation ETF, making it the sixth-largest holding in the fund.
Analysts at consulting firm Capstone estimate that Blue Origin will spend approximately $4.8 billion this year, with total spending since inception reaching $28 billion. The fresh capital is expected to support these ongoing expenditures as the company continues to develop its launch capabilities and infrastructure projects.
