Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jesus Sanchez was removed from Sunday’s contest against the Baltimore Orioles after being struck by a baseball thrown from the stands during the sixth inning. The incident occurred in the bottom of the inning, leading to Sanchez’s early exit from the match.

According to a statement from the Blue Jays, Sanchez suffered a right wrist contusion. The team confirmed that precautionary X-rays were conducted and were negative for any fracture. Sanchez remained in the game for two batters following the impact before being replaced by Yohendrick Piñango.

The circumstances surrounding the throw were detailed by Baltimore Sun beat writer Jacob Calvin Meyer. Meyer reported that a young fan appeared to believe Sanchez was inviting a game of catch, a gesture players occasionally make with spectators between innings. However, the fan threw the ball late, after Sanchez had already turned his back.

The Baltimore Orioles confirmed they had identified the individual responsible and removed them from the ballpark. In a statement, the Orioles organisation said it was conducting a thorough investigation into the matter while the fan remained ejected from the venue.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges regarding fan conduct and player safety in professional baseball venues. The Blue Jays and Orioles have both addressed the immediate medical and security responses, with the investigation into the fan’s actions still pending.
