Block launches Buzz, an open-source AI-integrated workplace chat platform

Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and Block, has announced the launch of Buzz, a new workplace group chat platform designed to compete directly with established tools such as Slack and GitHub. Built by Block, the financial technology company that also operates Square, Cash App, Afterpay, and Tidal, the platform integrates human collaboration with artificial intelligence agents within a single, unified workspace.
Dorsey described the application on X as model-agnostic, decentralized, self-sovereign, and open source. The utility of Buzz lies in its ability to merge disparate workflows into one interface, allowing teams to manage GitHub projects and collaborate with AI agents from the same window. This design addresses the growing challenge for employees who must coordinate tasks across multiple platforms as startups increasingly rely on AI agents to execute work.
Because the platform is open source, developers have full access to the source code, enabling them to create custom instances and deploy their own features to suit specific team needs. This approach contrasts with proprietary competitors, offering organizations greater control and the ability to self-host for security and sovereignty, a sentiment echoed by other entrepreneurs in the AI-native space.
The launch follows a broader trend of developers seeking alternatives to existing workplace infrastructure. Georgios Konstantopoulos, CTO at Paradigm, recently unveiled Centaur, an open-source virtual employee capable of running inside Slack or via API. While Centaur focuses on augmenting existing platforms, Buzz positions itself as a standalone challenger intended to reduce dependency on both Slack and GitHub.
A free desktop application for macOS, Windows, and Linux is now available, with the source code uploaded to GitHub. However, Block acknowledges that Buzz is in its early stages. While the platform offers a viable option for newer startups looking to investigate AI-native collaboration, the company suggests teams may wish to wait before fully porting their operations to the new environment.
