The Buffalo Bills have appointed Joe Brady as their new head coach for the 2026 season, marking a significant institutional shift following the dismissal of Sean McDermott. The decision comes after the team ended a five-year streak of division titles in 2025, despite securing a seventh consecutive season with double-digit wins. McDermott, who was hired in 2017 and led the franchise to its first playoff appearance in 18 years, was let go as management determined that reaching the postseason was no longer sufficient given the presence of quarterback Josh Allen.

Allen remains the central asset for the Bills, having been an MVP candidate since his first full season as starter in 2019. During this period, the team has scored 3,120 points while allowing 2,253, resulting in a +957 point differential that ranks 127 points better than the second-place Baltimore Ravens. Despite this statistical dominance, the Bills have failed to reach the Super Bowl since 1993, making only two AFC Championship Games during Allen’s tenure.

To address offensive limitations, the Bills traded for wide receiver D.J. Moore using a key 2026 draft pick, aiming to provide Allen with a primary receiving option. The organisation also initiated a major defensive overhaul under new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard, parting ways with key defenders including Matt Milano, Taron Johnson, Tre'Davious White, and Jordan Poyer. This restructuring was prompted by defensive vulnerabilities, notably ranking 30th in yards allowed per rush in 2025, which analysts cite as a primary factor in McDermott’s departure.

Betting markets reflect the uncertainty surrounding this transition. The Bills are currently co-favorites to win the AFC alongside the Baltimore Ravens, though their odds have shifted slightly following the New England Patriots’ acquisition of A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles. The AFC East is expected to be a tight contest between Buffalo and New England, with both teams priced at -300 to finish as the top two teams in the division. Analysts suggest value in betting on Brady for Coach of the Year at +800 but advise caution on the Bills' win total until the defence stabilises.

The 2026 schedule presents logistical challenges, beginning with a three-week homestand followed by a West Coast swing that includes a potential matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. The late season features a demanding run of four road games in five weeks, highlighted by a Thanksgiving Day matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. While the Bills have historically performed well in regular-season point differentials, the combination of a new coaching staff and a reshaped defence has led some experts to consider alternative betting strategies, including taking the Bills to miss the playoffs at +250.
