Big 12 withdraws lawsuit against Texas Tech over Sorsby eligibility dispute
The conference and Texas Tech have handled the dispute internally, while Brendan Sorsby remains ineligible and awaits the 2027 NFL Draft.
The Big 12 has withdrawn its federal lawsuit against Texas Tech over Brendan Sorsby’s eligibility, ending a legal dispute that began after an NCAA ruling found the quarterback ineligible to play for the Red Raiders.
The lawsuit, filed in June, followed a judge’s injunction that would have allowed Sorsby to play for Texas Tech this season. The conference sought declaratory and injunctive relief in response.
According to reporting by ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Big 12 and Texas Tech have since handled issues connected to the case internally. The terms, actions and consequences of that resolution have not been disclosed.
Texas Tech has confirmed that Sorsby will not play for the programme. His application for the NFL Supplemental Draft was denied, and he is now awaiting the 2027 NFL Draft.
The NCAA investigation followed Sorsby’s admission that he placed thousands of bets, including bets on Indiana while he was with the team. He had sought treatment for gambling problems.
Sorsby threw for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns and five interceptions for Cincinnati in 2025. His collegiate career has now ended amid the eligibility ruling and the fallout from the gambling scandal.
