Bieber injury deepens Blue Jays rotation crisis as playoff hopes waver

The Toronto Blue Jays have placed veteran right-hander Shane Bieber on the 15-day injured list following the discovery of inflammation in the teres major muscle of his throwing shoulder. In a corresponding move, right-hander Chad Dallas was recalled from Triple-A to bolster the pitching staff.

Manager John Schneider stated that Bieber is expected to refrain from throwing for a couple of weeks, though he remains hopeful the 31-year-old former Cy Young winner can return before the season concludes. Bieber’s start to the 2026 campaign was already delayed until late June due to elbow inflammation, making this latest setback a significant blow to the club’s pitching depth.

The injury comes at a critical juncture for the Blue Jays, who are currently two games out of the third and final American League wild-card spot. The team’s 2026 season has been characterised by rotation instability, with the club having given starts to 18 different pitchers, excluding openers.

While marquee free-agent addition Dylan Cease has performed as an ace and American League Cy Young contender, the rest of the rotation has struggled. Starting pitchers other than Cease have combined for a 4.87 earned run average on the season. The Blue Jays currently have four healthy starters and seven pitchers on the injured list, including Bieber.

Other key contributors have also been limited by health issues. José Berríos and Bowden Francis have not recorded innings this season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, and preseason American League Rookie of the Year candidate Trey Yesavage has been limited to 93 ⅔ innings.

Despite a 64-68 record and a -55 run differential, the Blue Jays remain in contention. The Cleveland Guardians currently hold the third wild-card spot with a .500 record, but five teams, including Toronto, are within no more than three games of the leader. SportsLine currently assigns the Blue Jays an 18.4% probability of making the postseason.
