Bellinger claims All-Star MVP as Yankees secure shutout victory
Cody Bellinger’s first-inning single powered a 4-0 American League win, earning him the Most Valuable Player award and joining an elite group of New York recipients.

New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger has been named the Most Valuable Player of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, following a pivotal performance that helped the American League secure a 4-0 shutout victory over the National League. Bellinger’s impact was immediate, delivering a two-run single in the first inning off National League pitcher Cristopher Sanchez to establish an early lead for his team.
The award marks a significant milestone for Bellinger, who becomes the fourth Yankees player in franchise history to receive the honour. He joins a distinguished list of recipients that includes Derek Jeter, who won in 2000, Mariano Rivera in 2013, and Giancarlo Stanton in 2022. Bellinger accepted the award from Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt, a moment shared on the field by his wife, Chase, and their young daughters, Caiden and Cy.
Bellinger’s victory comes after a period of statistical fluctuation. Heading into the All-Star break, his batting average had dipped to .254 from .280 through mid-June, and he had not hit a home run in a month. Despite the slump, Bellinger expressed confidence in his trajectory, stating that he felt he was on the right track before the mid-season pause. His father, former MLB player Clay Bellinger, watched from the back of the room, noting the surreal nature of seeing his son win the award.
The win follows a complex career trajectory for the 31-year-old. Originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2013, Bellinger enjoyed early success, including a National League Rookie of the Year award in 2017 and an MVP title in 2019 when he hit 47 home runs. However, he endured three subpar seasons and significant injuries from 2021 to 2022, leading to his release by the Dodgers. He subsequently revitalised his career with the Chicago Cubs, hitting a career-high .307 in 2023 before being traded to New York.
Bellinger’s commitment to the Yankees was solidified last winter when he re-signed on a $162.5 million, five-year deal. His father, who played for the Yankees from 1999 to 2001 and won two World Series titles, remarked that the decision to stay in New York was a "no-brainer" for his son, who has expressed a strong affinity for the city and the team. The younger Bellinger’s performance on Tuesday night reaffirmed his status as a key offensive contributor for the Yankees.
