In Beirut's Hezbollah-controlled suburbs, war with Israel comes at a price for residents
Dahiyeh residents face renewed threat after deadly attack on Hezbollah-controlled neighbourhood

An Israeli strike on the South Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh on June 7 has triggered a significant escalation in the regional conflict, resulting in confirmed deaths. The neighbourhood, which is governed by the Islamist militant group Hezbollah, is identified as Israel’s declared enemy in the ongoing war. The attack marks a sharp intensification of hostilities in an area that has seen repeated military activity.

A team of journalists from France 24 visited the area on June 8 to assess the atmosphere on the ground. The visit highlighted the severe security constraints facing civilians and media personnel alike. The news organisation reported that the team was prohibited from showing residents' faces without explicit consent, a measure taken due to fears that individuals could become specific targets for subsequent strikes.

The incident in Dahiyeh follows a fragile ceasefire established in early April 2026, which has since been tested by renewed violence. A previous attack on Beirut’s southern suburbs in late May 2026 had already resulted in casualties, including two deaths and 20 injuries, according to background reports. The June 7 strike appears to have dismantled the remaining stability of that temporary truce.

Diplomatic efforts to address the breach of the ceasefire were underway prior to the escalation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held discussions with counterparts in Britain, France, Turkey, Qatar, and Pakistan regarding ceasefire violations on Sunday, the day before the Israeli strike. These talks aimed to de-escalate tensions before the situation deteriorated further.

In response to Iranian missile attacks, Israel conducted strikes against military targets in western and central Iran, including explosions reported in Tehran, Tabriz, and Isfahan. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards also targeted locations in Sulaymaniyah, Iraqi Kurdistan, described in some reports as headquarters of "terrorist groups". The conflict has thus expanded beyond the Lebanon-Israel border into direct strikes on Iranian soil.

The operational reality in Dahiyeh remains precarious for its inhabitants. The requirement for explicit consent to capture images of residents underscores the lethal risk faced by those living in the area. With the regional conflict escalating and diplomatic channels struggling to contain the violence, the human cost in Beirut’s southern suburbs continues to mount.
