The Chicago Bears have secured a position as the third-best team in the National Football League following a decisive 59–37 win over the Carolina Panthers. The result prompted FOX Sports to elevate the Bears in its weekly power ratings, placing them behind only the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos. This significant jump in standing has triggered a reassessment of the franchise’s value within the sports betting market, with experts debating the extent of the team’s improvement.
The offensive performance was the primary driver of the shift. Quarterback Caleb Williams, who previously held 15-to-1 and 16-to-1 odds for the MVP award during the preseason, now possesses the third-shortest odds at multiple sportsbooks. The market reaction has been tangible, with the Bears’ lookahead betting line moving two points in their favour week over week. Caesars Sportsbook head of football Joey Feazel noted that the market lean suggests the Bears are legitimately improved, highlighting Williams’ display as a key factor in the re-evaluation.
However, not all analysts are convinced that the Bears are a top-tier contender. Professional bettor Ed Salmons ranks the team eighth, listing the Rams, Ravens, Bills, Eagles, Niners, Patriots, and Lions ahead of Chicago. Salmons argues that while the Bears have room for growth, their defensive limitations remain a significant concern. Another professional bettor echoed this sentiment, stating that while the offense may be elite, the secondary and lack of pass rush prevent the team from being ranked third overall.
The debate centres on whether the Bears’ defensive struggles were exposed by the Panthers’ performance. The Carolina offense averaged 7.7 yards per play and scored 37 points, leading some to argue that the Bears’ defence made quarterback Bryce Young look better than he should have. The consensus among sceptics is that the Bears must sustain their current level of play over several weeks before they can be confidently classified as a top-three team.
The broader betting landscape also reflects shifts in other leagues. In college football, injury concerns at Ohio State have moved the line against South Alabama from -4.5 to -7. Quarterbacks Nick Poulos and Matt Vezza are both listed as doubtful or questionable, a development that has prompted bettors to adjust their positions ahead of Saturday’s game.
